Medical Colleges in India: Government and Private Latest List 2025

List of Medical Colleges in India Admission 2025-26 PDF: Medical education in India is overseen by the National Medical Commission, which ensures the quality of medical colleges by conducting periodic inspections and granting recognition for specific courses. While most medical schools were established by government bodies in the 1950s and 60s, the 1980s witnessed the emergence of several private medical institutes, particularly in Karnataka. Subsequently, Andhra Pradesh also saw the establishment of private institutions in the new millennium. However, attending a private medical institute can be financially burdensome without government subsidies.

The primary medical qualification awarded by Indian medical schools is the MBBS degree, which comprises a four-and-a-half-year course followed by a one-year Compulsory Rotating Residential Internship (CRRI). Graduates can further pursue postgraduate studies such as MS in surgical specialties, MD in medical specialities, or DNB in various medical or surgical fields, typically lasting three years. Alternatively, they can opt for shorter diploma postgraduate courses spanning two years. Those interested in super or sub-specialties must hold an MS or MD degree and can obtain qualifications like DM or MCh.

Admission to medical colleges in India is currently based on the NEET (UG) ranking system introduced in 2021. Previously, institutions like All India Institutes of Medical Sciences, Christian Medical College, and others conducted separate national-level entrance exams. States like Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh boast a higher number of medical colleges compared to states like Manipur, Tripura, Chandigarh, Goa, and Sikkim.

In India, there are 543 medical colleges and 64 standalone PG institutes recognized by the National Medical Commission as of May 21, 2020. This comprehensive list includes renowned institutions such as the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences, Christian Medical College, Kasturba Medical College, and others.
