List of IIT Colleges in India Admission 2025 PDF: The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) form a prestigious network of renowned engineering and technology institutions in India, standing as pillars of academic excellence. Established in 1950, these institutions operate under the ownership of the Ministry of Education of the Government of India and are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act of 1961.
This Act recognizes them as Institutes of National Importance, outlining their powers, duties, and governance framework as the nation’s premier establishments in the realm of technology. Presently, there are twenty-three IITs listed under this Act, each enjoying autonomy while being interconnected through the IIT Council, a joint body that supervises their management. Serving as the ex officio chairperson of the IIT Council, the Minister of Education of India plays a significant role in guiding the collective journey of these esteemed institutions towards academic and technological advancements.
There are currently twenty-three Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) located in different cities across India, including Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Guwahati, Roorkee, Hyderabad, Patna, Bhubaneshwar, Ropar, Jodhpur, Gandhinagar, Indore, Mandi, Varanasi, Tirupati, Palakkad, Goa, Jammu, Dharwad, Dhanbad, and Bhilai. These institutions are regulated by The Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, which designates them as “Institutions of national importance” and outlines their responsibilities, authorities, and governance structure.

UG and PG Programs in IIT
The IITs provide undergraduate programs in various engineering and technology disciplines, postgraduate programs with specializations, and Ph.D. programs in engineering and science fields as well as interdisciplinary areas.
