In the year 2021, India churns out a staggering 1.5 million engineering graduates annually. The country’s technical education landscape encompasses 2500 engineering colleges, 1400 polytechnics, and 200 schools of planning and architecture.
Out of the multitude of engineering graduates emerging each year, a mere fraction of less than 5% hail from the prestigious pan-India national level autonomous institutes like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), and Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs). A little over 5% are affiliated with state-level autonomous institutes and unitary universities endorsed by the UGC. The bulk, comprising over 90% of engineering graduates, emanate from private and non-autonomous state-level engineering institutions mandated to secure approval from the regulatory body AICTE before offering courses.
The prevalent engineering disciplines at the undergraduate level encompass Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Chemical Engineering.
