The Labour Bureau, functioning as an attached office of the Ministry of Labour & Employment, diligently compiles the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers each month by collecting retail prices from 317 markets across 88 industrially significant centers in the country. The data gathered from these locations provides a comprehensive snapshot of the cost of living for industrial workers and helps quantify the fluctuations in price levels that impact their everyday expenses. In this press release, the index for the month of May 2024 is being unveiled to the public. The latest figures reveal that the All-India CPI-IW for May 2024 experienced a modest uptick of 0.5 points, reaching a total of 139.9, indicating a subtle shift in the overall cost of living for industrial workers in the country.

CPI AL/RL – Monthly Index Letter AICPIN for May 2024
In May 2024, the All-India Consumer Price Index for Agricultural Labourers (CPI-AL) and Rural Labourers (CPI-RL) (Base: 1986-87=100) both showed a significant increase, each rising by 6 points. The CPI-AL reached a level of 1269, while the CPI-RL reached a level of 1281. These indexes serve as crucial indicators of the economic conditions affecting agricultural and rural laborers across India, reflecting changes in the cost of living and inflation rates in these sectors.
In the data report released for May 2024 on the All-India Consumer Price Index numbers for Agricultural and Rural Labourers, it was observed that the point-on-point inflation rate based on CPI-AL stood at 7.00% for the month, showing a slight deceleration from the previous month’s figure of 7.03% in April 2024. Conversely, the inflation rate based on CPI-RL saw a marginal increase, reaching 7.02% in May 2024 as compared to 6.96% in April 2024. When comparing these figures to the data from May 2023, it is evident that there has been an upward trend in inflation rates, with CPI-AL recorded at 5.99% and CPI-RL at 5.84%.
